  1. On the subject of Petzl kit, on my last re-assessment we were using a new croll, which was so small it looked like it came out the xmas crackers. Neat, I thought, but on rescue from ascent type scenarios I found it just a bit fiddly at times. My 2 c.
  2. I have assessed at L3 5 times now, and every time I am nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. I think every L3 on re-assessment should be ready to accept new techniques, perhaps be humbled a little bit, and treat every minute as valuable. The basics cannot be forgotten or treated casually. A trainer or assessor will always look at the simple maneuvers and rigging tasks early on and first impressions always count. TACS is Technician Assessment & Certification Scheme, and there are various intro courses in early 2014 which Assessors and Trainers must attend, while all Level 3s were sent an e mail invite to sign up but is not mandatory for them. These courses are very limited in number and seemed to fill up real quick. Contrary to the above there are only 2 dates set in Scotland, so not really offshore biased at all.   4. Yes, just descended onto the knot, so that could go no further. Was easy enough to just rig a short haul system above him, unload the descender and control lower onto short link. A grillon is very handy in such situations too.

  7. Knots again - On my last L3 recert there was one exercise where the casualty had descended hard onto the alpine knots in the ropes. Go up and get him down. Must admit when leaving the ground I was slightly unsure but it all played out well anyway. Stay below the knots yourself was key. Assessor said he had seen all kinds of shenanigans to achieve this. Keep it simples I thought, seemed to work too.
  8. If you can document this with verifable evidence then definitely get in a proper recorded complaint to IRATA. Companies jump thru hoops to get that logo on their notepaper, and in turn they are given contracts on that basis, to then wilfully flaunt the ICOP etc of that organization is tantamount to fraud. The head load varies according to the angle of the rope, that is if the tensioned line does not terminate at the end of the main tramway but is redirected for example, via a pulley to an anchor or tensioning device, which may be the case if the line is being kept high. As we all know a 0 degree (ie straight up and straight back down over a pulley) angle imparts double the load on the pulley axle, and a 90 degree redirect would have a multiplier of 1.4, so this would need to be accounted for and then applied after the normal angle load on the tension line (eg 160 degrees is 3 x etc) to calculat
  10. Some good discussion there troops. As a generlization for tension lines at work, 3:1 one person, equalized. I think if you tensioned at 6:1 with 2 guys on your assessment the assessor might want to 'have a word'. All about the angles and loads on the anchors. Dont forget the head load either !
  11. You will get the same as everyone else rate wise, eg OCA rates for a L1 with 1 NDT ticket and zero experience is the EXACT same as a L2 with 3 NDT tickets and 7 years experience. A L3 with 4 NDT tickets and 12 years exp gets the same as a first time offshore L3 with 1 NDT ticket and 3 yrs exp. This all kinda sucks. No point in chasing tickets.
  12. Handrails. I don't rig off them, period. Seen enough handrails fall apart and holes in the bases (i.e. where the water collects), all suspect. If there is no alternative anchor, don't do the job. There is almost always an alternative. Lets be honest, if you cannot rig off process pipe work on most platforms, then why would a handrail be acceptable ?

There is at least one company operating in the North Sea which has told it's workers to remove the string from the shunt and to pull it down using the thumb and fore finger on either side of the retaining bolt... daft move I think, you are only a very very short step away from being a shunt grabbing b*****d at that point and heading for the deck at a fast rate. Idiots.
  15. Just because you have set yourself up as a 'limited company' does not mean you can go and get an ASNT qualification, does not work like that I am afraid. Proper NDT companies such as CAN, for example, will have ASNT approved procedures, exams, test pieces etc to which you will need to be examined in specifically for that particular company. Work for someone else, then do the same again for them. PCN certification is your own 'Personal' qual (hence the name) and very often these days the Client will require the techs to hold that instead, though some still will accept ASNT.
