Morning all,

I have been working in the rope access industry for 1/2 years now and am fond of working off shore. I am a level 1 IRATA but will complete the level 2 course if it were to ensure acceptance of a job on rigs. If anyone knows of any work going or any course, certs etc please don’t hesitate to respond or get in contact with me.

thanks.

Hi Colin

welcome to the forum!

Your IRATA level doesn't really dictate what type of job you are going to end up with, unless it's a Level 3 in which case you could either be doing the job that you've trained for ie a trade, or supervising a rope access job.

Your 'other' skills are what will get you a job - do you have any trade experience behind you? What other skills / qualifications do you have that would benefit an employer?

You wont find any work offshore with just a Level 1 qualification. You need your offshore survival, medical, MIST etc etx etc.. even then you still wont find work until you have a skill to use when you get to the worksite. Rope Access is only a way to reach the worksite, you'll need to do something once you get ther.

I currently work for a rope access firm that specialises installing signs/banners for big name clients all over the UK. This also includes minor scaffold frame building amongst other things. The jobs are always different and has helped me gain a lot of confidence on a rope and also experience working with a whole range of tools on a rope. We are also sub-contracted to a company that installs and services smoke vents around prisons, shopping centres etc. Could you point me in the right direction of a trade that is high in demand off shore so I can look into courses as I’m pretty certain that’s what I want to do next in my rope access career. I am also looking to complete the level 2 IRATA course in the near future. Hopefully increasing my chances of getting work offshore. Does anyone know of any companies that possibly could offer an apprenticeship working offshore. If so let me know, cheers.

Rope Access live demand by region is here:

https://rigg-access.com/admin/personnel/regional-skills-demand.asp

Global skills demand is here:
https://rigg-access.com/admin/personnel/global-skills-demand.asp

Electrician (COMPEX) is always in demand, as are welders and pipefitters. NDT pays good rates and offers a multitude of different career options.

Painting blasting is popular but very weather dependent and there's a lot of competition.  As I said earlier, your IRATA L2 wont really give you much of an edge finding work, whilst it's always good to move up a level don't upgrade with a view to it helping your employability much..
